Major Grant award to Prof. David Graizbord and Dr. Leonard Hammer

Feb. 7, 2023

The Arizona Center for Judaic Studies is excited to announce that Prof. David Graizbord and Dr. Leonard Hammer have been awarded a major grant from the University of Arizona’s Initiative for Resilience and International Development (AIRID).  AIRID’s Resilience Internships and Student Experiences Program (RISE) has awarded them $21,000, which will fund seven UArizona student internships during the Zambian component of this summer’s Judaic Studies’ Arizona in Israel Study Abroad Program.   Students in the 2023 Arizona in Israel–and Zambia Program will spend their first four weeks in Israel, in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.  There, they will study with Prof. Graizbord and Dr. Hammer, learning about Israeli society, culture, and politics.  They will also train with the Israeli NGO Tevel b'Tzedek, preparing for their internships in Zambia.  Throughout their time in Israel, they will learn about the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam (Repairing the World), about what it means for themselves and for the world!  Students and faculty will then travel to Zambia, where they will embark upon the RISE-funded internships.  They will train in Lukasa with the Zambian NGO Africans for Water, and then work in the village of Mphande on a project designed to create a sustainable system of agriculture and market development.  Their work will connect them to fields of study relevant to their unique majors and minors including, to name a few, religious studies, gender and women’s studies, politics, agriculture, engineering, health, and environmental studies.  It will, as well, provide practical applications for the value of Tikkun Olam. Mazel tov, Leonard and David!Arizona in Israel and Zambia ONLINE APPLICATION:  https://bit.ly/applyAZIsraelArizona in Israel and Zambia Information Packet HERE
