2023 ASOR Membership Service Award
Beth Alpert Nakhai, Professor of Anthropology (Judaic Studies), University of Arizona, has a long and distinguished history of service to ASOR.  Particularly notable has been her work in recent years with ASOR’s Initiative on the Status of Women, which was established in 2012 following a survey of ASOR’s women members.  Beth’s work as part of this initiative has been devoted to the pursuit of justice and equity for women in all aspects of life, within academia, and also within ASOR as an organization.  Her work in building the Initiative on the Status of Women has involved tirelessly gathering data on the representation of women in our field, where they work, how they are publishing, and whether they are advancing at parity with men.  Although the task of data gathering can be tedious, it shines a valuable light on the realities of representation within our profession and allows the organization to work towards a more equitable future.  As part of her work with ISW, Beth has also played a substantial role in organizing mentoring lunches where ASOR members at all stages of their career have been able to meet and be inspired by their female colleagues.
