"A Natural Act of Vengeance": The Threat of Jewish Fundamentalism

Within two decades Israel has witnessed a significant growth of Jewish fundamentalism. The pogroms at Huwara and other Palestinian villages are but a visible manifestation of a network of divergent Religious Zionist groups, all having as their goal the transformation of Israel into a theocracy. Some of the groups, indeed, see the current war as nothing but a harbinger of messianic days and a pretext for political violence.

Dr. Persico is a Research Fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute, a Rubinstein Fellow at Reichman University and as a Senior Research Scholar at the UC Berkeley Center for Middle Eastern Studies. His fields of expertise include contemporary spirituality, modern Jewish identity, Jewish Renewal, and forms of secularization and religiosity in Israel. His first book, The Jewish Meditative Tradition (Hebrew, 2016) was published by Tel Aviv University Press, and his second book, In God's Image: Selfhood, Freedom and Equality (Hebrew, 2021) was published by Yedioth.
