“Community Feasts in Antiquity: Barley Beer, Bread, or
Mush at Tell el-’Umayri, Jordan, in the Late 13th Century B.C.E.”
Gloria London, PhD., Ancient Near Studies

Over 25,000 animal bones and many cooking pots, the residue of feasting, were found in a repository near a 13th century B.C.E. house at Tell al-’Umayri near Amman. The building itself held 70-100 large storage jars, in addition to jugs, large kraters, and oversized cooking pots. Mounds of barley were also recovered. Texts from the Bible and ancient Near Eastern sites, and ethno-historical studies of traditional households in Crete and the Peloponnese, shed light on how and why this large quantity of food was used.
