Contradictions & Tropes of Antisemitism Conference February 23 &24

Luciana Berger, MSc, former Member of Parliament in the UK, University of London

Sunday, February 23, 2020

6:30pm - 8:30pm
Tucson Marriott University Park

Former Member of Parliament in Great Britain who left the Labour Party over the Party's increasingly overt antisemitism and leader Jeremy Corbyn's failure to address it. She has now joined the Liberal Democrat Party.   After receiving a Master’s of Science degree in Government, Politics and Policy from the University of London, Berger worked for several years in as a business consultant and in government service. She began her political career in 2010 as a Labour Party Member of Parliament representing Liverpool Wavertree. She eventually became a vocal opponent of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn over a variety of issues (Brexit, public health, climate change), but most importantly over his failure to address antisemitism within the Party.
In Berger’s view, during Corbyn’s leadership antisemitism had become “institutionalized” within Labour. She has endured that antisemitism since she began criticizing Labour leaders over this critical issue. Former Prime Minister Tony Blair described the treatment she has received in her own party “shameful.” In essence, Berger was driven from her party for being Jewish, or for at least standing up for Jews amidst institutionalized antisemitism. Upon leaving Labour, she eventually joined the Liberal Democrats and is seeking to represent the north London borough of Finchley and Golders Green, which has a large percentage of Jewish residents. In addition to her duties as a Member of Parliament, Berger also currently serves as Vice President of the Jewish Leadership Council, an organization dedicated to promoting the interests of the Jewish community throughout Britain.
In her speech Berger will address antisemitism in Great Britain generally and her experience with it in the context of British politics specifically.
