ABOUT JOHN LIKINS
As a child, the late John Likins was adopted by former UA president Peter Likins and his wife Pat into their multi-ethnic family. John enjoyed success in academics and received a scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh. He also succeeded as an athlete, winning the Pennsylvania State Championship in wrestling. John had a positive impact on the people around him and in spite of the stereotype of a macho wrestler, he had a gentle soul. Later in his life John developed schizophrenia, a crippling brain disorder, and fought difficult battles with it as an adult. He died tragically at the age of 33. Thankfully his death is not the end of the story and The John Likins Memorial Scholarship will be just a small part of John Likins’ legacy. We hope that this legacy will be evident in the lives of the recipients of the John Likins Memorial Scholarship at The University of Arizona.
