The John Likins Memorial Scholarship supports an incoming freshman from a Tucson area high school, majoring in any fields related to gender, race, religion, ethnicity, or area studies at The University of Arizona. The award must be used toward tuition and educational expenses. The amount of the award varies from year to year, depending on the annual distribution from the endowment, which is held at the Jewish Community Foundation.

This scholarship has been made possible by the Peter and Patricia Likins Family, the Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona, and the Arizona Center for Judaic Studies at The University of Arizona. Peter Likins was president of The University of Arizona from 1997-2006.

As a child, the late John Likins was adopted by former UA president Peter Likins and his wife Pat into their multi-ethnic family. John enjoyed success in academics and received a scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh. He also succeeded as an athlete, winning the Pennsylvania State Championship in wrestling.  John had a positive impact on the people around him and in spite of the stereotype of a macho wrestler, he had a gentle soul. Later in his life John developed schizophrenia, a crippling brain disorder, and fought difficult battles with it as an adult. He died tragically at the age of 33. Thankfully his death is not the end of the story and The John Likins Memorial Scholarship will be just a small part of John Likins’ legacy. We hope that this legacy will be evident in the lives of the recipients of the John Likins Memorial Scholarship at The University of Arizona.
