Areas of Expertise:
The Arizona Center for Judaic Studies has three areas of special expertise: Ancient Israel, Medieval and Early Modern Judaism, and Modern Israel. For decades The University of Arizona has been a leader in the study Near Eastern archaeology, most notably under the leadership of now Emeritus Professor William G. Dever, who is widely regarded as one of the premier Near Eastern archaeologists of the late 20th and early 21st century. Prof. Beth Alpert Nakhai now leads the Center’s efforts with regard to archaeological excavation and related research. Her expertise focuses on the intersection between literary remains and archaeology as well as gender studies. Prof. Ed Wright focuses on Hebrew Bible and early Jewish literature, especially apocryphal and pseudepigraphic texts and the reception of biblical traditions in later Jewish and early Christian communities.
