Uncle Moses
Yiddish with English subtitles. Director Sidney Goldin and Aubry Scotto
USA , 1932, 87 min, black and white
Based on a novel by the renowned Yiddish writer, Sholem Ash, the movie portrays on “Uncle” Moses,
a former butcher in Poland who became a prosperous clothing manufacturer on the Lower East Side.
“Uncle Moses” was the first Yiddish talkie, and it reflected the political and cultural themes of its time:
a crude parvenu, Moses tries to recreate the shtetl in a paternalistic way at his sweatshop, while
fighting against any attempt to unionize his workers.
