“The Faces of Israel:

State & Religion in the
Jewish Homeland”
Wednesday, January 25, 2012
The Tucson Jewish Community Center (3800 E. River Rd)
6:30 pm
Film Screening co-sponsored by The Weintraub Israel Center,
HeartBeat of Israel Series
David Ben Gurion publicly declared ‘the establishment of a Jewish state… to be known as the State of Israel.’ But what does it mean to be a Jewish state? Do these two characterizations, ‘democratic state’ and ‘Jewish state’, work well together? What happens when they don’t?
Faces of Israel explores the delicate balance between state and religion through the context of marriage. The film has been called “powerful … mature … honest … sophisticated ,” and “a must see,” and serves as an excellent springboard for discussions about Jewish identity, religious pluralism and civil liberties in Israel.
Faces of Israel is director Amy Oppenheimer’s first documentary film. She is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University where she studied International Relations and Jewish Studies. Amy has been involved in the Jewish community in many capacities and has lectured at conferences and universities across the country.
