Yom Kippur, also known as Day of Atonement, is one of the holiest days of the year for the Jewish people. Its central themes are atonement and repentance. Yom Kippur completes the annual period known in Judaism as the High Holy Days (or sometimes "the Days of Awe").
It is up to each faculty member to decide whether or not to assign a reading day for classes held on a Jewish holiday. Students should refer to their course syllabus or contact their instructor for guidance.
